Writing matters to the Lettering Arts Trust because …..

‘In the beginning was the word’….. but how was that word displayed….. as a cave painting or hieroglyphics
or etched into stone. Word display has adopted many guises from those origins through to pen on parchment, typewriter and now digital display that appears on a screen. Throughout it all carved symbols or letters into stone have survived and members of The Lettering Arts Trust are still finding new ways of displaying them. It must surely be one of the few aspects of modern life that has not changed much in thousands of years.’

Martin is a trustee of the Lettering Arts Trust, which promotes excellence in letter design, letter drawing and letter carving, on stone, wood and paper; through workshops, courses and apprenticeships.
